So really, watch as many courses as you want, and dont feel bad about not paying.  And please let others know how valuable the courses and content is. Here is the most current list of my courses, all of which get you an upgrade. Step 9: Tell a friend Im sure you know someone who could use the courses (who couldnt use the courses on LinkedIn, or informational interviewing, or becoming a better listener, etc.?) this, and it helps me when you spread the word to others! Heres the video that shows how to do this: How to Get Free JibberJobber, and Your 30 Day Pass to the Pluralsight Library See the most current list of Jason Alba courses here. Are We Negotiating - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Are We Negotiating - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The simple answer is yes. The slightly more complex answer is always. As noted in this post I wrote about Microsofts Kati Quigley and her thoughts on Everyday Negotiation it is not necessary to be a natural born negotiator. Some people are born this way. If you happen to be one of them … congratulations. If you arent, Im sure youve got more than a few experiences where you found you either really liked or really hated the experience of negotiating. The good news is … you can learn to be a better negotiator. Negotiation is the ability to bring about compromise between two or more people while manipulation seeks to satisfy only ones own wishes. Taking the time the understand the basics and to prepare before you go into your next negotiation can pay big dividends. As you can expect, when you improve your negotiation skills you begin to standout in your career. Of course, there is more to a career than negotiation, but when you think about it you negotiate before you start a job and sometimes as you exit a role too. So, its a good idea to improve your understanding of negotiation, Manipulation is Not Negotiation The one-sided experience of manipulation deserves a moment of time. The Car Dealership Dilemma Car dealerships are one of the most common examples of challenging negotiations. A lot of people may  love the idea of buying a new car, but many dread the idea of shopping for one. This is why no-haggle car buying has become popular. If youve ever shopped for a car you probably experienced some of the most direct, and often one-sided types of negotiation. Most people dont like this type of “negotiation” and will do everything they can to avoid it. The fact is thats not negotiation that is manipulation. Im not denigrating car sales professionals. There are other sales roles where manipulation is de rigueur. Avoid it when you recognize its happening. There are entire schools of thought around the psychology, sociology and anthropology of manipulation in order to sell you something.  And, that may be why so many people avoid negotiating. Manipulation is often a monologue. One party trying to convince (force) you into a situation that is one-sided. Negotiation is a Dialogue When you are in a negotiation youll probably know it. Youll feel and see the back and forth. Youll believe you have the option to contribute, to counter, to accept or decline, and to walk away. A good negotiating experience allows all parties to know they worked together to assemble a reasonable offer that suited the needs of all parties. Five Tips to Improve Your Negotiating Skills From Kati Quigleys Negotiating Tips Don’t ask for one thing at a time Lay out what you want to ask for. You may think you are tipping your hand, but the reality is that you are setting the stage for securing a deal. Have Options In parallel to Tip #1 make sure you have considered options. Also, prepare yourself to hear things to may not have anticipated. Good Negotiation Takes Practice This is not a surprise. Practice whenever you can. Using Questions for Clarity To insure you understand (Habit 5 Seek First to Understand Stephen Covey) ask clarifying questions. If the other side isnt willing to answer your question you may need to step back from the negotiation. To get to the root of the issue you may want to use The Five Whys Curve Balls Happen Be willing to consider things you had not expected or envisioned. Be willing to take a pause and re-visit the conversation after youve had time to research, evaluate, and perhaps check with your colleagues. To Negotiate is to be Human The reality is that we are always negotiating. Whether it’s with ourselves, our spouse, our friends, our colleagues, and of course our bosses, customers and business partners. It’s better to be prepared and ready. That’s what Kati’s points highlight. There is always room to improve. So, Are we negotiating? Yes and always. Be prepared.

How to Add the X-Factor to Your CV

How to Add the X-Factor to Your CV When competing in todays job market, the new job seeker must consider having a CV that stands out. The background and job skills for the applicant must have what is called an x-factor. These unique qualities about the CV will stand out. These qualities may be about achievements or personality. What is the x-factor Finding the x-factor may be as simple as brain storming about the applicants achievements or about the applicants background or something in your personality. An ex-boss may be able to quickly assist with a list of the characteristics that made the employee a productive one. For example, being on time is always critical. Completing job tasks by a deadline is always required. Performing at least 100% is critical in todays job market since there are many applicants for the same position. Examples of x-factors X-factors may be a background in economics, for example, if the job position is at a banking facility. Advanced degrees always help to place a person ahead of the pack. Attending seminars and lectures in the employment field is critical for placement and advancement. Impressive CVs may include teaching or demonstrations that the applicant has presented in the selected field. Quality in a subject matter can be realised in this manner. Supervising in a selected field is a way to show that a particular avenue is well accomplished. Is your x-factor/achievement relevant The accomplishments noted on a CV are important. They show that a certain level of performance has been reached. However it is important today that the accomplishments be more matched to the job that is being applied for. Academic grade accomplishment can show that certain subjects that are relevant to a job have been well learned. Higher grades mean a better understanding of the subject matter and perhaps show that the individual may be a better employee. How to get the x-factor across in the CV How to get the right information across to the potential employer is critical. Presenting the right information must begin by specifically matching the job skills with the job. Standing out could come at this juncture. If the job requires certain knowledge, then focusing on this area of study with the CV presentation is a positive idea. The more the CV matches, the more it will stand out to the employer. Why it is important to stand out from the crowd It is important to stand out from the crowd because the competition is something that cannot be ignored. Always remember that someone brighter may be around the corner. Explaining and proving why the CV being presented is the one to select is the critical job for the new applicant. Other ideas to put the CV ahead of the rest Other ideas that could be used to gain an advantage include a spotlight on any extra activities that might be beneficial to someone in that job position. If volunteer work is helping the applicant to understand the field of choice, then this kind of information could help sway the selection. Hand delivery of an application may be something to consider. Since there are probably numerous applications coming in for the same job, putting a face to a piece of paper may be the deciding factor between two possible employees. Phoning the employers office on a weekly basis after handing in the CV, may keep that particular person in the forefront of the job contenders. Researching the company thoroughly is a good idea. Knowing critical details about the company may help in the final decision-making. Showing a genuine interest in the job and the company will always put a best foot forward. It says that the person is interested in the position. Are you trainable Two other indicators that an applicant will be a good employee seems to the critical talents of being trainable and fitting in the office culture. If an employer sees that the applicant is just not willing to go along with the group dynamic, then it may be determined that this person is either not trainable or will not be a good social match. For example, if the group dresses rather conservatively and the applicant comes in unusual attire, then the management may conclude that this particular person may be somewhat disruptive of the culture at the office. If the personality is one that comes across rather loudly, then the interviewers again may think that a degree of disruption may occur. Innovation Innovation seems to be important in finding that perfect job. Having the right attitude is critical. Being able to see new ways of presenting in a job interview may be important. As always, tempering innovation and common sense are the critical factors in deciding where to apply and how to do this. Remember that not all jobs are for everyone. Besides the certain qualifications needed, there is a culture that must be addressed. Developing new skills may be a new adventure. The right person for the right job may be determined by the outstanding CV. Personal Branding Really Matters in Executive Hiring - Executive Career Brandâ„¢

Personal Branding Really Matters in Executive Hiring Are you resistant to defining and leveraging your personal brand in your executive job search? Maybe you feel so inundated by social medias over-promotion of the concept that you feel its all a bunch of nonsense. Whether or not you are willing to embrace personal branding, know that it truly matters. Understanding and being able to communicate in job interviews the personal attributes, strengths, passions, and unique combination of skills that drive you, can make or break your success in landing a good-fit job. Knowing and being comfortable in your personal brand helps you generate chemistry when you’re interviewing. s recent series of posts How I Hire, by top-influencing business leaders, confirm how important chemistry is in the hiring process. The posts also point to the importance of researching your target employers, to know what makes you a good-fit for them (in terms of hard and soft skills) and to be able to succinctly communicate your value. Here are a few snippets from some of the articles, featuring powerhouses such as Richard Branson, Michael Powell (President CEO at NCTA), Angie Hicks (Founder and CMO at Angies List), and Tim Brown (CEO at IDEO). Branson â€" Focus On Personality: The first thing to look for when searching for a great employee is somebody with a personality that fits with your company culture. Most skills can be learned, but it is difficult to train people on their personality. If you can find people who are fun, friendly, caring and love helping others, you are on to a winner. Powell â€" I Look For Your Failures, and Your Character: When I’m considering hiring someone, the first thing I want to know is: have they ever failed? Have they ever struggled with a serious challenge? The ability to learn from failure, not pure talent, is the greatest predictor of success. I deeply admire creativity, insight and innovation. I look for employees who see around corners; who notice the little things that others miss; who aren’t afraid to take risks and challenge how things are being done. Hicks â€" The Top Four Traits Every Employee Needs to Have: I want to hire people who are: Smart, adroit and able to adapt to a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. Confident enough to try something new and fail; we believe in trying things and tossing what doesn’t work. Passionate about what we do, as well as strategic and no-nonsense in their approach. Committed to their work, without taking themselves too seriously. When I’m doing the interviewing, I want to know what attracted the candidate to Angie’s List, what interests him or her most about the job and why he or she is leaving the current or previous employer. Some of my best hires were people I didn’t necessarily have a position for, but whose abilities and personality motivated me to find or make a spot for them. Brown â€" 5 Tips for Landing a Job at IDEO: 1. They say we more than I when recounting accomplishments. 2. They talk about failures, not just wins. 3. Theyve spent time teaching as well as learning. 4. They’re nice to the receptionist. 5. We believe in asking for forgiveness, not permission. This goes for the job application process, too. Turning in a standard-issue resume and cover letter won’t turn heads. Candidates who have wowed us have taken creative license and gone the extra mile to demonstrate their capabilities and passion. Dont Lie In Your Résumé But Dont Tell the Truth, Either - Pathfinder Careers

Don’t Lie In Your Résumé… But Don’t Tell the Truth, Either - Pathfinder Careers Don’t Lie In Your Résumé… But Don’t Tell the Truth, Either The other day, I was talking to a recruiting friend of mine who is especially known for his candor about talent acquisition issues, and we were comparing notes about our résumé frustrations. As a career industry professional, I advise clients to NEVER lie on a résumé. Yet many people abandon the truth and move into uncharted areas of creative fiction when it comes to discussing their career background. And believe me, they come up with some incredible whoppers. But as a résumé writer, I am not there to act as a judge/jury to my client’s work history.   My work does require asking in-depth questions to clarify what the client is telling me, but its not my place (since they hired me) to act as the police officer investigating the truth to their claims. But you know what? I can TOTALLY tell when a client is lying to me about their accomplishments in the consultation. They won’t make eye contact, and can’t get as specific as they need to, and will do anything to change the subject.  It’s that clear. If I can spot these stinkers a mile away, you can only imagine what it must be like for human resource folks. Given the fact that it’s their job to separate fact from fiction, they absolutely specialize in reading through the clouds of smoke to find out where the real BS lies. They won’t explain to you why they aren’t calling you in for an interview. They simply move on to the next candidate versus telling you what you are doing wrong. So you should NEVER (ever) lie on your résumé simply because you WILL probably be found out sooner rather than later. And this could have long-reaching repercussions on your reputation and career brand, as borne out by the recent media flurry over the inaccuracies included in a certain large web company executive. But the flip side of this sword is that you can’t ever tell the truth in your résumé, either.   Consider this: As much as we have to not lie about ANYTHING in our résumé, we also can’t tell the truth about what really happened at a previous job:  That you had the worst boss in the world that created such a toxic environment that you were sick in your stomach every morning going into work.  That a spiteful and  co-worker sabotaged you.  That you did your job right, but due to an idiot co-worker’s incompetence, they bungled a major project that had you as the project manager.  That you were mislead about what the job involved and didn’t know it wasn’t a fit until you got in there, and hated it so much that you had to leave.  That the company wasn’t exactly forthright about the state of their finances and went belly up. There are a million stories out there that many workers wish they had the opportunity to explain themselves, but résumés, being the inflexible documents that they are, force all of us to walk down a narrow road that provides no space whatsoever to explain what REALLY happened, or at least have an opportunity to provide your version. Wouldn’t it be great if the résumé could evolve into a 100% ACCURATE document that reflects the truth without creating a need to lie? What do you think? Should the résumé be made into a completely honest document? Pinocchio Picture by  André Koehne
