Study says pregnancy is the equivalent of running a 40-week marathon

Study says pregnancy is the equivalent of running a 40-week marathonStudy says pregnancy is the equivalent of running a 40-week marathonIf Ironman races or marathons havent tested your physical core enough, try pregnancy.Carrying a baby to term was essentially like running a 40-week marathon, according to shocking new research that likened the amount of energy used as the same as top athletes.Researchers, which published the findings in Science Advances, looked at human endurance in some of the worlds toughest and longest endurance events. Data was collected from Race Across The USA, a 120-day, a 3,000-mile race that covers nearly a marathon a day for six days per week. Other events like triathlons and the Tour de France were included. When analyzing the data from the events, researchers looked into metabolic satzs for participants in the events. For reference, the highest metabolic rate any human can handle is 2.5 times their resting rate.Pregnant women operate at 2.2 times their res ting metabolic rate daily, however, that sustains for far longer than any marathon runner as a normal term usually lasts for a duration of 270 days.Every mother who has gone through a pregnancy has experienced that effort themselves, Duke University professor Herman Pontzer toldTodays Parent. Pregnancy is the longest-duration, highest-energy-expenditure thing that humans can do. Mothers probably arent surprised by this. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

6 ways to influence without authority

6 ways to influence without authority6 ways to influence without authorityI am in the difficult situation of being unofficial project lead, responsible for team performance to schedule and budget. How can I influence and motivate the team to get the job done, when I do not have a job title that commands their respect?Leadership textbooks make a point of advising up-and-coming leaders not to accept responsibility for a business outcome without first negotiating a job title and hierarchical authority. In other words, you should always strive to lead with authority. This is great advice in principle, but in the real world youll find organizational structures that are in a constant state of flux and management structures that are highly matrixed, not to mention limited opportunities for promotions. There are times when an emerging leader needs to roll up their sleeves, engage the team, influence, and get the job done.At a company womens leadership event, Dr. Cecilia Kimberlin, former Vice President, Quality and Regulatory Affairs with Abbott, made a point of saying, There is a myth that the higher you go in the organization and the more positional authority you gain that you just have to say do it and people get it done. I hate to bust your bubbleIn this type of environment, influencing without authority is one of the fruchtwein valuable skills you can learn today. As another senior-level woman in a manufacturing organization once explained, In my company, influencing skills are the single most important success factor after knowing your job.So while positional influence is something to aspire to, until you have it, remember that there are many other useful forms of influence that you could be taking greater advantage of.Your 6 Sources of Influence1. Positional influence The authority that comes inherent in a job title and role.Positional influence is perhaps the most overrated of all forms of influence, as people spend a lot of their careers waiting for it when the y could be influencing in other, more immediate ways. For example2. Expertise influence The influence that comes with your background, experience, qualifications and career accomplishments.Nora Denzel is a member of the board of directors for Ericsson, Saba and Outerwall. When she spoke to senior technical leaders at a womens conference, she reminded them that, Its not what you know and its not who you know. Its who knows what you know.Who knows what you know? Are your colleagues and management aware of your expertise? If not- dont be the best kept secret in your organization Find appropriate and effective ways to promote your accomplishments, in order to maximize your expertise influence.3. Resources influence Having the ability to attract and deploy the resources you require to get your job done. When budgets and headcount are tight, it is important to demonstrate that any company resources allocated to you are invested well. And dont make the mistake of turning down additional res ources that could help you perform your job. If you can take an additional resource and use it to deliver a greater return on that investment, youre not doing your company any favors by being frugal.Negotiate for the resources you need, use them well, and you will be entrusted to manage even greater resources in future.4. Informational influence Having a handglied on the pulse of what is going on in the organization.Seek out information about changes before they become officially known, such as new projects, opportunities, re-orgs, resource allocations, budgets, and long-range plans. Having a heads up on this information helps you make better business decisions, more rapidly.Over time, others will come to rely on you for your decision-making ability. When that happens, youll be utilizing your informational influence.5. Direct influence Being firm, fair, and professional when someones behavior is out of line.Heres where leadership and parenting have a lot in common. A caring parent w ill step in when a child puts them self or others in danger. There will be times as a leader when you need to do the same, using your direct influence to take that person aside and have a tough love conversation. The best leaders do this in a way that is firm, fair, direct, and confidential. They also take the time to share their vision for that individual and their future potential, and in doing so, act more like a mentor than a boss.Leaders who do this well gain a great absprache of respect from their people. By using your direct influence well, you can make a big difference in another persons career.6. Relationships influence The influence that grows as you build great working relationships with those you rely on to get your job done, and everyone else that your role touches.Dr. Sophie Vandebroek, Chief Technology Officer with Xerox, said, Its not enough to have a bright idea. I have seen too many projects led by great, passionate people fail because they tried to be a lone influe ncer. You have to get the right people in the boat with you. You have to engage the entire human fabric. When you take time to build great relationships across the human fabric of your organization, you are less likely to need to resort to cajoling or persuading others to get things done. Instead of being the sole driver of an idea you can achieve a lot more by collaborating with people who know you and trust you.So dont try to be a lone influencer. By fully using the power of relationships and of all of your Sources of Influence, you can gain credibility, get buy-in for ideas, and make a larger impact in your company, with or without the positional authority of a job title. This article was originally posted on BeLeaderly.com.

Swimming with reef sharks taught me about fear and confidence

Swimming with reef sharks taught me about fear and confidenceSwimming with reef sharks taught me about fear and confidenceI inhaled into my snorkel and adjusted my mask to get a clearer look at the six-foot reefsharkswimming straight toward me below the surface of the water. The sunlight filtering through the top layers of the ocean illuminated the whiteness of hisjaws, revealing the serrated edges of dozens of rows of teeth. I knew that he saw me, that he sensed me. I started kicking my fins once more and extending my arms in front of me, propelling me closer and closer to thesharkwith each stroke. I welches off the coast of Bimini, the westernmost island in theBahamas, and we were in open ocean no cage, no wetsuit, no handlers.Sharks are the puppies of the sea, the captain, Neil Watson, had announced, moments before I jumped in the water. The founder ofBimini Scuba Center, Watson welches busy chumming the water with lionfish carcasses while trying to convince the 40-plus people str anded on two boats in the middle of the Caribbean that sharks were harmless. He should work in shark PR.I welches in the Bahamas with friends for theWoody FoundationsannualLionfish Bash, which raises funds and awareness for paralysis and other disabilities. Wed spent the past few days spearfishing lionfish, a venomous and invasive species destroying the coral reefs. Now, our prey welches being used to lure our predatorsDozens of sharks began to frenetically circle the water between the boats, expectantly waiting to be fed once again. I was one of only a handful of people aboard a tiny motorboat that was bobbing up and down in the waves. The vessel was barely larger than the increasingly aggressive sharks, who kept drawing closer to the starboard side, near enough to touch.Watson began shouting reassurances from across the water - he was with the rest of the crew in a large, covered boat, aptly named Dive God See, sharks arent bad. Theyre just misunderstood. The man should really wor k insharkPR.He threw out the last of the lionfish remains. But theyre fed now, so they wont mind you jumping in with them. The smaller boat needs to go in first, or else well scare the sharks.I felt an oncoming rise of nausea - wed been at sea for nearly two hours, and I was beginning to feel increasingly dehydrated and perilously hung over. But no matter how much I was suffering on that boat in the 95-degree heat, I would certainly suffer more in theoceanwith the sharks. I had no choice. The rest of my friends were on the larger boat, and they didnt have to jump in first. Id opted for the smaller boat so I could work on my tan - and I was about to die in the name of a solid base.I looked down at my purple polka-dotbikini- the bright color and pattern was a magnet for sharks - and felt like bait. But I surprised myself when I found myself heading for the stern of the boat, slowly climbing down the ladder steps. I was either going to die of sun and alcohol poisoning on the boat, or be killed in the water by sharks, I thought. At that point, I really needed to get out of the heat.Just remember, dont be scared, Watson called out one last time. Youre a big animal too. Thats the only rule I have If you act like prey, theyll think youre prey. But if they think youre a shark, theyll respect you like they wouldanother shark.I was the first one in the water. And now, here I was, swimming straight toward my death. I kept repeating in my mind I am a shark, I am a shark. But every muscle in my body was twitching, telling me to avert course, to at least try to save myself. There were worst places to die than the island ofBimini, I reasoned. The island was beloved by Hemingway, so at least it would have a literary angle (and relatively few witnesses).Out of the corner of my mask, I saw another shark dive below me and a third lurking beneath my floating body. I tried not to wonder why the rest of the party wasnt yet in the water. I looked up to see the oncoming shark and realized I had to act quickly. Was I going to change direction? And I kept swimming forward. I picked up the pace. I wanted to collide (and meet my fate) sooner rather than later. The shark seemed to swim faster too. We were eye level, both of us just below the top of thewater.Id never felt so vulnerable, so mortally exposedI dont think Id ever fully grasped my own mortality until that very moment, when I fought every natural reaction in my body to change direction, to panic, to shriek for help. But deeper than this impulse to escape was the knowledge that if I were to lose control - to splash and cry for help - I wouldnt survive. Finally, we were nearly head-on, face-to-face. Or jaws to snorkel. I needed to be near the surface so I could breathe air through my snorkel what was the sharks excuse? I was playing a game of chicken with a shark. What to do in this occasion? Politely swim below, so he could bite me and see if he liked the taste? Keep going straight? Punch him in the no se like Id seen onShark Week,or refrain from engaging in a fight Id surely lose?Ive never forgotten this moment, though Im not sure what my lesson was, because everything feels so trite. That were all connected? That were all animals on this crazy, rapidly changing planet, just trying to survive? Or that maybe in order to be brave, you have to force yourself. Maybe to be ashark, you have to pretend youre one already. Maybe such bravery can only be found when you dont have any other options. It was instinctive. So, I suppose, heres the lesson The only way to overcome fear - and its crippling limitations - is to look it in the face and not flinch. To swim toward what scares you and have faith in yourself to survive.I kept the course, and as we drew closer, at the last minute, thesharkdove down, just barely beneath me. His dorsal fin grazed the length of my body as we brushed against one another in the ocean. My entire body felt electric. He realized me. He saw me and let me live. And I saw him and chose to not be afraid. We coexisted. Maybe I was a shark. When I turned back to face the boats again, most of the sharks had vanished. By the time the people in the larger boat entered the water, none were left. Friends whod witnessed my interaction with the shark from the safety of their boat thought I was crazy. Delusional, they said. Who swims right up to a shark?Which, to be fair, is a valid question. This article was originally posted on Brit + Co.com.

6 Ways to Feel Less Awkward Networking - The Muse

6 Ways to Feel Less Awkward Networking - The Muse6 Ways to Feel Less Awkward NetworkingGet out and network mora.Just talk to mora peopleWhy not ask someone for help, maybe in your network?Have you ever heard any of the above when you are talking about networking? Doesnt it make you want to stab the person who said it in the eye?Yeah. Me too.Heres the thing that I love about networking, though Everything awesome in your career comes directly from it. I know, thats a big statement, but its true. New ideas for your career, support for when you want to kill your boss, information about salary, inside intel on promotions, help figuring out what youre good at doing, what companies are hiring- basically everything.Heres what I hate No one likes to talk details about how to do it Or even the big picture strategy behind why certain things work. Telling someone to just go and network does not actually help them accomplish it.So, lets pull back the curtain and talk. Seriously.1. Networkings Tot ally NaturalSo you can take a deep breath about feeling like a bother (or anxious mess), and put your anxiety to use. When people ask me for help, the number one thing they want help with is how to be more confident in these situations. How do they stop feeling so, well, bad, when they reach out to people?Such a great question First off, we as humans have been wired to network since the dawn of time. Weve done it by banding together and sharing knowledge in small migrant groups, knowledge that helped keep us alive. Then we started building societies and cities and did the saatkorn thing When we share and learn from each other, we survive, grow, and have more fun. Its actually pretty awesome. And it happens more than you think. For example Anytime you ask for a restaurant recommendation or catch up with someone you bump into while running errands, you are networking. Seriously. Whew.I hope you feel slightly better. But if not, I want you to remember this as well If youre tied up in kno ts worried about bothering someone by asking for help, you are almost 100% guaranteed not to be a bother. Why? Because you are so worried about it, you are much more likely to be polite, thoughtful, and courteous when you do reach out- and thats a recipe for success. Never knew your anxiety could help, eh? 2. The Best Way to Network Is to Be a HumanThe good news here? You already areHow many times have you agonized over what to say to someone in an email or at an event? You want to be polite, but not impertinent, formal but nice, clear but interesting. Ugh, so stressful.Heres the good news about networking Its really just based in human connection. We like people more when we feel connected to them. Heres the bad news Its hard to connect with a stilted mess. So take a second and take stock of you. What do you like about yourself? Your sense of humor? Your smile? Your ability to make witty comments? Your listening skills? Write down a few of things that you like. Now, when you next re ach out to someone, put that list front and center. If you are funny, feel free to be a little funny in your email. If you are charming, be charming. If you love your smile, use itEmbrace you. Thats what people respond to, and thats what will make them comfortable (and therefore more likely to connect) with you.But what if you struggle with this, or just feel awkward (despite your list?).Well, one way to connect is to3. Name the Elephant in the RoomSometimes its okay to state the obvious about whats happening with you or the eventHi, I normally feel really awkward walking up to a stranger at an event, but Im trying to get out of my comfort zone, so I thought Id say hello.OrWow, is it me or welches no one paying attention to that speaker? Did you notice?Or even Hello. I promised myself Id have two conversations with new people today, do you mind being one of them? And if youve lost touch with someone then its okay be open about it, like this Hey- I know its been forever since we last chatted and I feel like I fell into a hole. But I was thinking of you yesterday and wanted to say helloPeople connect with you when you tell the truth. And sometimes the truth is that you feel awkward, or that you have let a lot of time go by, and thats normal. Dont be afraid to own it. 4. Real Flattery Also WorksSeriously. I love using sincere flattery in any situation- but especially over email. People love to feel smart, or wise, or interesting, and taking the time to do a little research and send a compliment really (really) works. Why? Because it makes them feel good and valued. And who doesnt want to reward thatSomething as simple as I loved reading your last blog on Bigfoot. Your theory that he is really an alien is fascinating Would you mind telling me more of how you started blogging?OrYouve worked at two companies I really admire, and your path is so interesting. Would you mind telling me more about how you started and your industry?Or Your Twitter updates make me laugh, I had to reach out and say thank you Or evenI love your shoes/earrings/phone/watch- I had to come over and compliment you on it.The point is that any (important sincere) flattery goes a long way and get the person in question to feel good things about you. Good feelings mean more help for you. Why? Because they know youve been paying attention, and that makes you worth their time. So, dont be afraid to reach out with a kind remark to people. Most likely, when you need their help later, they will remember you5. Some People Are Busy (Also Awful)About 70% of people are awesome. Maybe 20% are really socially awkward, and 10% are just jerks. Sometimes youll reach out to someone and he or shell want to respond but be busy, or be having a bad day, or a million other responsibilities that have nothing to do with you. That happens, and its OK. Dont stress about it, just follow up one to two more times, and then walk away. They are not for you- but plenty of people are.And some people are kind o f snobby, and youll walk up and start a conversation and they will be kind of a jerk about it. Theyll make you feel bad by not responding to your email, or by not being friendly at an event, or by not paying attention to what you are saying, and it happens. Thats their insecurities in action, but it doesnt have to be yours.Again, not everyone is for you, so if you meet one of them just move on. But the good news is that most people are pretty nice, so dont give up on humanity yet.6. But Most of Us Feel Like YouSo truly, its OK.Remember that awkward feeling? Yeah, almost all of us feel it. So, if youre standing alone at an event, and you see someone else standing alone, chances are he will be 1000% grateful that you came up and talked to him. Seriously. Wouldnt you be?And if you feel uncomfortable in the middle of a conversation, he probably does too. Why? Because its a little unnerving to put yourself out there, and not everyone is great at it. You arent alone in this, but keep doin g it because it is natural. If you do it enough, youll find your peopleSo relax- youve totally got this networking thing No, really If you keep these truths in mind the next time you hit an event, youll find it to be a whole lot easier than you thought. Need more help? Heres an awesome video and worksheet to help you create a network completely from thin air- in less than five minutes

Design Apps Work in Progress

Design Apps Work in Progress Design Apps Work in Progress Mike Hilvers has been designing agricultural equipment for 16 years for Ohio-based Unverferth Manufacturing. When starting a project in the past, Hilvers would begin drawing on his computer in Inventor, a software package for 3D mechanical design then with pencil, paper and calculator, he would determine the loads passing through certain links or points as a first decision point on whether or not to go forward with a design or concept. But about a year ago, he began playing with a new mobile app called ForceEffect, which allows him to quickly and easily simulate design options during the concept l of the design process. By creating a preliminary layout of linkages, he can verify a concept or design even before he creates models. Now he is a regular user because of the time it saves in eliminating the hand calculations. Its easy-to-use, intuitive, and a nice design tool to verify a linkage or loading of a design, he says, and it can confirm or decline a design or concept.Computer Aided DesignWhile there are many mobile apps useful to engineers in the areas of calculation tools, formulas, libraries, viewers, and collaboration, there is paucity when it comes to design. When software developer Gianluca Natalini introduced FingerCAD and Finger3D in 2010, he said they were the only CAD apps on the iTunes store. behauptung apps allow users to draw anything that can be designed on a traditional PC CAD including mechanical components with their fingers. These have given to the iOS device a CAD software that can be used with our fingers for the first time, says Natalini. He adds that user response has been good and that he considers his apps in a continual state of development based on user feedback.Free updates for enhancements are based on requests of the users, he says. It is a very important concept for me to always give to users what they need with free updates and also for new features and enhancements.Natalini, who has 18 years of experience in app development, works out of a home office in Latina, Italy, developing apps for the iTunes App Store and for the MAC App Store.Autodesk ForceEffect offers viewers free early access to developing software. Image Play.google.comSimulation ToolsForceEffect is considered an app in pre-beta. It comes out of Autodesk Labs, San Rafael, CA, which provides the public with free, early access to prototypes, technology previews, and experimental web services, and uses direct customer feedback to improve products and advance technology solutions. Its a place we put software that isnt for sale yet. We test it, and if it works, great. Its basically pre-beta software. Its out there for people to work with, explains Luke Mihelcic, a simulation product marketing executive for Autodesk.ForceEffect is available free for download for both iOS and Android devices and mora recently was joined by ForceEffect Motion, which allows users to develop functional moving mechani cal systems right on their mobile devices while the original app is the static version. Both apps do all the simulation and engineering calculations on a mobile device.Mihelcic says its an avenue that Autodesk uses to gain insight about usage, when the product is still in an early conceptual stage. We can determine if this is something we should integrate into other software tools that we sell down the road, he said. The development of ForceEffect began about two years ago when Autodesk was looking to develop technology relevant to customers in design and identified an opportunity related to engineering calculations.Every engineer takes a statics class and draws free body diagrams, says Mihelcic. That takes a long time to do, is very labor intensive and if there is a mistake, it has to be started all over again. There were no good mobile or online tools that solved this challenge, he adds, and thus ForceEffect was born.By the end of 2012, there had been more than 450,000 downloads o f the two apps. Mihelcic said the primary audience has been students, but he also has had feedback that they arent the only ones. He said he heard from an engineering manager that if his engineers would use ForceEffect, There could be many reiterations, designs, and prototypes that could be eliminated because we would know they wouldnt be feasible based on this.Mihelcic says he hopes it will become a natural part of the engineering design process but exactly how the functionality might be available in the future, whether part of a library of mobile applications that will help engineers do different things, remains to be seen.It all depends on feedback from users, he reiterates.Nancy Giges is an independent writer. There could be many reiterations, designs, and prototypes that could be eliminated because we would know they wouldnt be feasible based on this.Luke Mihelcic, Autodesk

Facebook hack exposes personal data of 50 million users

facebook inc hack exposes personal data of 50 million usersfacebook inc hack exposes personal data of 50 million usersMaybe you were like me and woke up to your Facebook account forcibly logged out this Friday. Now we know mora about why. On Friday, Facebook announced that a cyber attack earlier this week exposed the personal information of up to 50 million users, and as a safety measure, around 90 million users were being logged out and asked to re-enter their passwords. Fifty million people were definitely impacted and 40 million accounts were logged out as a precautionary step, the company said.Facebooks said the hack exploited the companys code introduced in July 2017 to let users upload Happy Birthday videos. The code was associated with theView Asfeature that lets people see what their profiles look like to other people. This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over peoples accounts, Guy Rosen, Facebooks vice president of product manag ement, said in a statement. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they dont need to re-enter their password every time they use the app. The data vulnerability allowed users to gain control of a Facebook account directly without needing a password.Following the cyber attack, Facebook said it fixed the vulnerability in its code, temporarily suspended the View As feature, and has informed law enforcement.Facebook data breach is the latest scandal for the embattled companyFacebook said there is no need to change your password, but you may as well log out if you have not been asked to already to be safe. So far, there are many troubling unknowns about what exactly happened. Facebook said it does not know the identity of the hackers or the origin of where it took place, and it does not know the full scope of what information the hackers accessed or misused. This is not comforting news Through a Facebook account, you can potentially lea rn a lot about a persons friends, posts, contact information, and other private information you do not want to be made public to a hacker. The data breach occurs at a particularly tumultuous time for the social media giant.Facebook is already facing user trust issues after 87 million Facebook users had their personal information exposed by political firm Cambridge Analytica. The scandal was a final break for many, resulting in a DeleteFacebook campaign.Nevertheless, Facebook is still enormously popular. More than two billion people entrust their data to the social network each month. After the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised that Facebook would do better. We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we cant then we dont deserve to serve you, hesaid earlier this year. I know it takes longer to fix all these issues than wed like, but I promise you well work through this and build a better service over the long term. But people may not want to wait around for this better service. After each scandal, users become more aware of how vulnerable their information can be to hacks. It remains to be seen how many people still want to stick around to see if Facebook still deserves their trust.

How to stay out of the office politics and do your job

How to stay out of the office politics and do your jobHow to stay out of the office politics and do your jobIs it possible to just go into work, do your job, and stay out of the office politics and cliquey stuff?Yes, Ive made a career out of it. And heres how that goes, including the ups and downs.Work hard, and finish work fast. (This is how you set the table for what Im about to tell you. This reputation helps you get away with a lot of stuff Ill explain below)I tend to avoid, or even find a way to not go to meetings. Because 95% of corporate meetings are puffery to see and be seen. They accomplish little to nothing a good chat or email conversation can get done. Also, they drain energy and always go past the time allotted. If management calls you on it, tell them you need to finish the billable work, you know, the stuff that makes money. By skipping stupid meetings, you may issue behind in the corporate trail to be promoted, but youll get to keep doing the doer work without being bothered.Lets pause here to combine the two points above into what I like to call, The Mexican Standoff. Management will pass you over for promotions based on silly face time. But, the benefit is, you smashing deadlines makes you necessary. So youll probably get average to above average raises. But, you get left alone and get to avoid social events, see or be seen meetings, and other corporate events. You get known as the doer of sh-t quickly.Say hello to people onceIf they ignore you or just look right through you, you avoid them going forward. Youll gain a reputation of quiet and keeps to himself. While this hurts you for large promotions, you get to skip all the, Will they say hi, do they want to talk today? garbage many people worry about in Corporate Cubefarms. If management ever asks you about it, tell them how you tried to say hello in the hallways, but corporate zombies looked right through you or ignored you. This gains you automatic favor, because corporations get the spot light turned back on them. Why arent people saying hello? Why are they walking around like zombies? Plus, you are justified in not bothering in trying to be social anymore. You tried once, and if they want to be social, now its the other guys turn to try. I have more important things to do.When I walk in the building every day, I have a list of people who Ill say hello to, and a list of people I walk right by to ignore. Unless they reach out and say hello first. I walk straight to my desk and get work done. No stopping by cubes to ask how peoples fake weekend went. No coffee and chit-chat. I march to my desk, open the energy drink, fire up the computer, work, and go home. Thats it.Never, ever, ever talk about social life with these people99% of them will use these details against you. Be boring, ON PURPOSE. Mention boring family trips if asked, keep your social life discussions boring. Why? To avoid resentment and jealousy. And, you remain invisible, so you can just do your work and leave early.Avoiding drama means avoiding HRNever talk about religion, politics, or anything sexual. Ever. Couple this with your deadline smashing reputation, you get to do what you want. Your broadcasted social graces should remain boring at all times. You may go home and be a superstar, go on exotic vacations, and have a great life outside the work. Never broadcast thisEver. It invites jealousy and envy. Remain invisible.Sometimes, leave work early, or come in lateRemember my first bullet point above? Smashing deadlines grants you exclusions youll appreciate down the road. EI might leave two hours early to go work on a side business. I might leave two hours early to go spend time with my daughter. Are the other zombies upset? Maybe. But, remember, I smashed deadlines. Also, changing up your schedule a bit keeps the zombies off your back. theyll sit wondering, why is he late today? or Wow, he left early today. More importantly, they learn less about you. When you come in and leave the same time every day, zombies start to think they know you, and want to chit-chat. This is a no-no. Because chit-chat leads to HR complaints, hurt feelings, and hour-long gabfests about nothing. Your job is to be invisible. Smash deadlines, and get out to go do other things you enjoy. The goal is to get things done, but avoid taking on a huge workload. Because if they arent going to promote you, then whats the point? The bonus of this is, you, as the doer and finisher of stuff, get to avoid corporate politics, drama, and other unpleasantries.P.S. But Don, you may ask What if your manager calls you into their office and asks you about being more social and seen? What if they ask you to take on more work?Ah, this is simple. Remind them of all the work youve finished, and remind them how a cost of living raise isnt conducive to taking on even more work, especially compared to what you get done versus your coworkers. You see, if your average coworker in your role gets three things d one, and you get five to six, then you have leverage. Your babo might ask you to do 7, which includes a bunch of drama and a whole lot of headaches. You skip it, or go around it. If they push, remind them you do more than any of your coworkers. They can either pay you more, or leave it at that. I use a line which is helpful for this. This aint a charity, and I sure as hell aint Mother TheresaBe cordial with your boss, but push back when they try to extract additional work out of you, remind them of your non-promotion. Always remind them when necessary. This pushes them back to be happy with the deadline smashing productivity you already do.Its at this point where youve reached the Mexican standoff conclusion. If the boss tries to get you to do even more without promoting you, you have the option to leave. Besides, the boss knows you smash deadlines. Why interrupt that with corporate politics and drama?Don Sevcik is the president of MathCelebrity and author of One Second Math. This ar ticle first appeared on Quora.
